Here’s news for you: URL shorteners don’t work on Facebook.
Yup, you read that right. BuddyMedia conducted a recent study that found that full-length URLs get three times as many clicks as URLs that have been shortened.
The reason for the negative impact of URL shorteners on engagement has to do with trust. Full-length URLs tell the user what website they’re about to visit (http://johnhaydon.com for example) whereas short URLs hide this important piece of information.
This isn’t an issue on Twitter because Twitter users understand the reason for using short URLs. Facebook users see no need to use URLs shorteners.
